It’s back to school time across America, and students returning to class may notice changes that have occurred during the break – a new coat of paint in the hallways, or new computers in the library. But one change adopted by many schools over the summer may not be as noticeable – a conversion to solar power.
At Cranston High School in Providence, Rhode Island, a rooftop solar installation will save an estimated $8,000-$10,000 on the school’s electricity bill.
In British Columbia, Canada, 330 solar panels were installed on the roof of the Lower Nicola Indian Band school gymnasium. The panels will generate up to 85 kilowatts of electricity to power the school, while also helping to teach students about sustainable energy, and the need to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and other energy sources that negatively impact the environment.
Closer to home, construction of six solar projects in California’s Encinitas Union School District were completed over the summer. The estimated 25-year savings from the solar project is $21 million, according to the district.
And even more projects are still in development. The San Jose Unified School District is planning solar panel installations at all 41 of its schools, which will save about $30 million over 25 years. Think how many computers, textbooks and athletic equipment can be bought with those funds.
In the state of Washington, the Peninsula School District is teaching students to build simple solar powered machines and measure how much energy is generated. The lessons are part of an effort to encourage a movement toward clean energy.
